Grants
in Action... 2001-2002
During
the 2001-2002 grant cycle, grants were awarded within the following
areas of interest: Organizations that focus on education and training
in the Latino community and arts education. The Distribution Committee
awarded $20,100.00 to 12 local organizations. These grants were
made on behalf of the Lucile Murchison Marvin Fund, Alper Family
Memorial Fund, Codington Memorial Fund, and The Community Foundation
of Southeastern North Carolina Fund (formerly the Cape Fear Community
Foundation Fund).
Black
Arts Alliance, Inc. - $2000.00
A Festival of Black Film on Saturday and Sunday, February 23-24,
2002. The goal of the festival is to expose the community to independent
and major motion pictures that examine the African American culture.
Catholic
Social Ministries - $2400.00
To continue, enhance and expand current Work Force Development and
Life Skills Training programs serving the Hispanic/Latino community.
Columbus
County Arts Council - $1000.00
To plan and present “Celebrate the Arts 2002” the largest
student art show in North Carolina.
Domestic
Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. - $2000.00
Funding for interpretation, translation and counseling for the Spanish
speaking population and Spanish speaking clients.
DREAMS
of Wilmington, Inc. - $1500.00
“Telling our Stories: Voices and Images of DREAMS Student
Artists” is a project that focuses on young people developing
their creative self-portraits through creative writing, painting,
video film-making, creative movement and dramatic arts.
E.
A. Laney High School - PTSA - $850.00
Art students (70) will design and create CONCRETE RELIEF (walkway)
from their arts building, through a landscaped garden, to other
campus areas. Each student will develop an individual relief sculpture
(surface) to be utilized in a form (direct casting technique) for
each, separate stepping stone to be used in the walkway (4’X70’).
Grant funds will be allocated to purchase materials and supplies.
New
Hanover County Partnership for Children - $2050.00
“Los Chiquitos” or Small Friends supports Latino families
by offering evening child care for children of parents who attend
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Funding to be used to
hire a bi-lingual child care provided.
Cameron
Art Museum (formerly St. John’s Museum of Art) - $2000.00
The African American Dance Ensemble Residency Project will be held
two weeks each
year for three consecutive years to promote African dance, drum
and culture throughout
Wilmington as well as productive interaction amongst a diverse group
of partners within
the community.
St.
Mary Parish Dental Clinic - Friends of Tileston - $2400.00
Latino Parent Outreach Program - To encourage the prevention and
early detection of dental disease among children at greatest risk.
Thalian
Hall Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. - $1500.00
A two-day residency by the Carlota Santana Flamenco Dance Company,
(January 31 and February 1, 2002) including activities to attract
dance students and Latino students to the event.
Wilmington
Symphony Orchestra - $2025.00
Expand educational outreach through the formation of a Wilmington
Youth Symphony.
Brunswick
County Literacy Council - $375.00
Purchase quality bi-lingual books to be used as supplementary materials
for Hispanic ESL students.
